CD/ DVD/ BLU RAY

Background

Compact Discs

A compact disc is a storage medium with digital data recorded on its surface. An optical beam reads the CD and reproduces the sound. Because the beam does not touch the CD, there is no wear and tear on the disc.

Digital Versatile Discs

Digital versatile discs (DVDs) work in a manner very similar to CDs. Like a CD, a DVD is a disc layered with pits and lands. A DVD, though, can have more than one layer to it; a CD does not. Because of this, a DVD can hold about seven times more data than a CD.

Blu-ray Disc

Blu-ray DiscBlu-ray (not Blue-ray) also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a new optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

History

Social Impact

In my opinion,I think cd's and dvd's have made a huge impact on the society. We first had theater then we slowly transitioned to cd's then dvd's. From there we could listen and watch from our own homes. The big impact that we have now from technology is 3D Blu-Ray. This is changing the whole society, for consumers to buy 3D HD televisions now. Another thing is the society has a variety of topics to talk about amongst each other about the lastest cd or dvd release.
